Different Ways to Journal (Plus End of January Prompts)✍️
Journaling for the season you’re in
Journaling is one of the simplest ways to get your thoughts onto paper.
It has helped me gain clarity and, on some days, has simply lifted my mood.
It’s basically a tool to help you declutter your mind.
Over the years, I’ve used a mixture of journaling methods depending on the season I’m in.
So, here they are.
Brain Dump Journaling (mental decluttering)
I brain dump my thoughts when I’m feeling:
Anxious
Decision fatigue
Racing thoughts
Overwhelmed
This type of journaling is all about release, not insight.
It can be about a situation or an experience you need clarity on. You can set a timer for 10–15 minutes and write down everything that’s on your mind.
The goal is to have no structure.
It can be messy and that’s okay.
I personally use this method whenever I feel like a lot is going on mentally. You can also include it as part of your morning or evening routine.
Prompt-Based Journaling (guided reflection)
If you’re a beginner, this method is a great place to start.
It’s especially helpful when you don’t know where to begin.
This method helps with:
Self-awareness
Clarity
Emotional processing
You only need one prompt and a few honest lines.
Example prompts:
What’s been taking up the most space in your mind lately?
What feels aligned right now? What doesn’t?
What am I avoiding and why?
Scripting Journaling (future-self alignment)
This journaling method is all about thinking bigger.
You write as if you’ve already achieved your dream or goal. Write as if it has already taken place, focusing on how you feel and what you experience.
Keep it simple and somewhat believable.
Scripting isn’t forcing, it’s rehearsing safety in the future you want.
This helps with:
Vision
Confidence
Nervous system safety around goals
Check-In Journaling (daily or weekly grounding)
This type of journaling only takes a couple of minutes.
A simple structure to follow:
How do I feel today?
What do I need?
What would support me right now?
That’s it. It’s quick and can be done in under five minutes, yet it can shift your mood quickly.
Intuitive / Free-Flow Journaling
This is one of my favourite ways to journal.
It helps with:
Self-trust
Emotional honesty
Mental clutter
Begin by writing your raw thoughts or feelings without censoring yourself. The goal is simply to write, whatever comes up.
You can also write a letter to your future self, which is a powerful exercise.
If you’d like to write one, you can see my process here.
End-of-Month Reset: Reflection Prompts
We’re at the end of January 2026, which makes it a perfect time to reflect.
Use these prompts:
What stood out to me this month?
What drained me? What energised me?
What did I learn about myself?
What am I ready to leave behind?
What do I want to carry into next month?
How did I show up for myself?
What did I achieve?
What can I let go of?
These prompts should give you some clarity on your progress this January.
I used to journal daily, but now I journal as and when I need it.
Use your own discernment and choose a method that works best for you.
Journaling isn’t about becoming someone else it’s about coming back to yourself
See you in the next one,
Salma
P.S. - writing in a cute journal also helps.

Love this. Yesterday, I did a brain dump and out came a post. I'll have to try some of these other more intentional journaling techniques. Thanks!
"Great introduction for journaling...
and I like that "Script Journaling" concept in it.
“Visualisation + Mafestation” in a subtle fresh practice…" and that's how I posted it.
Thank you for this clear introduction about journaling...
PS: I am gonna try that "Script Journaling" for sure
